Retention (watch-time)
Retention is how much of a video viewers actually watch — the curve from the hook to the end. Platforms reward high watch-time with cheaper distribution, so retention is both a quality signal and a cost lever. Disciplined teams structurally test edits to hold attention.
After the hook, retention is won by matching visuals to the script (so the eye and ear reinforce each other), tight pacing, and a payoff that earns the CTA. Structural testing — changing the middle while keeping a winning hook — is how you lift the retention curve.
